KATO HD35V5 Versatility: The 3.5 Tonne Powerhouse with 2.5 Tonne Access

The KATO HD35V5 is defined by its ability to bridge the gap between the compact 2.5 tonne class and the higher-performing 3.5 tonne class. The hydraulically expanding track frame (from 1,550 mm to 1,800 mm) is the core feature that unlocks this versatility.

Here are 12 reasons highlighting the versatility and performance advantage of the KATO HD35V5 over a fixed-width 1,550 mm, 2.5 tonne machine:

1. Narrow Access Compatibility (Retracted)

By retracting its undercarriage to 1,550 mm, the HD35V5 can gain entry to job sites that are typically reserved for smaller 2.5 tonne machines. This means contractors can confidently bid on residential jobs with minimal gate or side-access clearance without sacrificing power.

2. Immediate Power Advantage (Weight)

Once on site, the HD35V5 provides approximately 1,000 kg of additional operating weight (around 3,500 kg vs. 2,500 kg). This extra mass significantly improves stability and traction, enabling the machine to handle much heavier loads and absorb high-impact forces without becoming unsettled.

3. Superior Breakout Force (29.1 kN)

The 3.5 tonne class machine delivers a far greater bucket digging and arm breakout force (the HD35V5 provides approximately 29.1 kN). This high-level force allows for faster and more effective digging through hard clay, compacted rubble, or frozen ground, where a 2.5t machine would slow down or struggle.

4. Enhanced Lifting Capacity

The combination of greater operating weight and the expanded 1,800 mm track width provides dramatically improved lifting capacity and reach. This is essential for safer placement of heavy materials like large concrete pipes, retaining wall blocks, or large root balls for tree planting, tasks that would be difficult or dangerous for a 2.5 tonne unit.

5. Maximum Side-Stability (Expanded 1,800 mm)

Once expanded, the 1,800 mm stance significantly increases lateral stability, which is vital when slewing (swinging) a full bucket of material or when working on slopes. This stability reduces the risk of tipping and allows the operator to work more confidently and quickly.

6. Increased Digging Depth and Reach

The larger arm and boom geometry of the HD35V5 allow for a greater maximum digging depth (over 3.3 meters). This extended reach is crucial for deeper utility trenching, sewer line installation, and foundation work that exceeds the typical limitations of a smaller 2.5 tonne class excavator.

7. Wider Attachment Versatility

The higher hydraulic flow rate and greater structural strength of the 3.5 tonne machine support the use of larger, heavier, and more productive attachments. This includes bigger hydraulic hammers, wider auger drives, and more powerful mulching heads, increasing the range of specialized work the machine can perform.

8. More Efficient Dozer Blade Work

The wider track stance and heavier dozer blade allow for quicker and more aggressive site cleanup, backfilling, and levelling. The extra weight behind the blade means the operator can move substantially more material in a single pass than a lighter, fixed-width machine.

9. Optimized for High-Torque Work

For high-torque applications like running an auger for long periods or using a hydraulic breaker on concrete, the additional engine output and robust three-pump hydraulic system of the HD35V5 provide sustained, reliable power, minimizing the risk of overheating or stalling under load.

10. Reduced Project Times and Fuel Costs

By accessing a tight site and then having 40% more power and stability than a fixed 2.5 tonne machine, the overall time spent on excavation and material handling tasks is drastically reduced. This translates directly into lower labour costs and better hourly profitability for the job.

11. Superior Grading and Levelling Precision

The enhanced stability provided by the wide undercarriage, combined with the precise pilot controls, makes fine grading and batter (slope) work smoother and more accurate, as the machine experiences less "bounce" or roll during delicate movements.

12. Maximum Zero Tail Swing Benefit

The HD35V5 combines the power of its weight class with a Zero Tail Swing (ZTS) design. This means even when the tracks are fully expanded to 1,800 mm for stability, the counterweight remains within the track width, ensuring maximum power and stability while still guaranteeing safety when working right next to buildings or traffic barriers.
