EQ 1.7T Hydraulic Thumb: Precision Control for Your Mini Excavator

The EQ 1.7T Hydraulic Thumb is a rugged, high-performance attachment designed to transform your 1.5 to 2.0-ton mini excavator into a versatile material handling machine. Engineered for durability and precision, this thumb allows operators to easily grab, lift, and place bulky or irregular items like logs, rocks, and demolition debris.

Key Features

  • Custom-Fit Geometry: Specifically designed for 1.7-ton class excavators to ensure optimal closure with the bucket teeth and maximum gripping force.

  • Heavy-Duty Construction: Fabricated from high-tensile, wear-resistant steel to withstand the rigors of demanding job sites and heavy-duty cycling.

  • Serrated Edge Design: Features a multi-tooth, serrated profile that provides a secure, non-slip grip on awkward loads.

  • Smooth Hydraulic Integration: Equipped with a high-quality hydraulic cylinder that offers responsive, feathered control for delicate placement or high-pressure clamping.

  • Pivot Point Strength: Reinforced bushings and greaseable pivot pins ensure long-term reliability and reduced maintenance downtime.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does this thumb come with the hydraulic hoses? Yes, the EQ 1.7T Hydraulic Thumb includes hydraulic hoses but will require fittings for the primary connection. Depending on your machine's specific auxiliary layout, additional adaptors or extensions may be required.

Can I install this on an excavator larger than 2 tons? While it may physically fit some 2.5T models, we recommend sticking to the 1.5–2.0T range. Using a thumb on a machine heavier than its rated capacity can lead to premature wear or structural failure of the thumb assembly due to the higher breakout forces of the larger machine.

Do I need to weld this onto my excavator arm? The EQ 1.7T is designed as a weld-on attachment. The base plate must be professionally welded to the underside of the dipper arm to ensure it can handle the high clamping pressures during operation.

Can I still use my bucket normally when the thumb is retracted? Absolutely. When fully retracted, the thumb sits tightly against the dipper arm, allowing for a full range of bucket movement and standard digging without interference.

How often does the thumb require maintenance? Maintenance is straightforward but essential. We recommend greasing the main pivot pins every 8 to 10 hours of operation (daily) to prevent friction wear and ensure smooth hydraulic movement.

Is it compatible with a quick hitch? Yes, the geometry is designed to work in conjunction with most standard mini excavator quick hitches and buckets. We recommend checking the "tip-to-tooth" alignment during installation for the best grip.

Hydraulic Thumb Installation Guide

Phase 1: Preparation & Positioning

  • Initial Setup: Start by curling the bucket and dipper all the way in.

  • Clearance Check: Position the thumb on the dipper stick to ensure it has enough clearance from the quick hitch.

  • Surface Prep: Once the final position is decided, remove the paint from the welding areas to ensure a clean bond.

Phase 2: Alignment & Tack Welding

  • Initial Tack: Tack weld the thumb into position.

  • Alignment Check (Retracted): Verify that the thumb is perfectly parallel with the dipper stick.

  • Alignment Check (Extended): Extend the thumb to a 90-degree angle and confirm it remains parallel with the dipper stick.

Phase 3: Final Welding

  • Disassembly: Remove the hydraulic cylinder and the thumb from the bracket.

  • Bracket Preparation: Ensure the brackets are securely tack-welded, then cut out the middle brace so only the upper and lower brackets remain.

  • Final Weld: Complete the welding of the brackets and allow the metal to cool completely.

  • Finishing: If desired, paint the brackets to match the original dipper stick color.

Phase 4: Final Assembly & Testing

  • Reinstallation: Reinstall the thumb and cylinder, ensuring everything is properly aligned.

  • Clearance Testing:

    • Retract the thumb to the top position and bring the dipper stick all the way in.

    • Cycle the thumb to ensure it clears the main boom.

    • Note: If the thumb does not clear, you may need to trim its length to provide the necessary clearance.

  • Functional Check: Check the mesh between the thumb and the bucket.

  • Completion: Install the hydraulic hoses and perform a final operational test.

3 Way Ball Valve

Add a 3 Way Ball Valve so you can turn the taps to power your thumb or move it back against the dipper and turn the taps to power your auger drive or rock breaker.

The 3 way ball valve can be added between your piping and hydraulic couplers, so you can simply adjust the valve from auger mode to thumb mode and start grabbing away!

Please note: Some fittings or adapters may still be required to set up the 3 Way Ball Valves.
